Charlton will play Brentford in a JPT match being televised live by Sky on Wednesday evening.
The rules of the competition mean that the Addicks will have to field six regulars so working out the team may not be as difficult as some think.
It is a case of which players the manager wishes to rest, as opposed to which ones he would like to give a game to. For example, Powell would probably like to play John Sullivan but that would mean an extra outfield player would have to tale part.
This is a competition the Addicks are capable of winning and a trip to Wembley would appeal to many. The League is the obvious priority but early elimination from a winnable cup competition does not guarantee promotion.
So the manager has a balancing act but will almost certainly opt to rest as many regulars as he is allowed, but which ones?
Bradley Wright-Phillips will be top of the list and his regular strike partner Paul Hayes – who has tired in recent games – is also likely to miss out.
Dale Stephens is another who will benefit from a rest and Powell may decide to rest his central midfield partner, Danny Hollands, as well. Skipper, Johnnie Jackson, will probably be given a breather as well.
The replacements? Mikel Alonso travelled to Sheffield and could play some part. Andy Hughes will anchor the midfield with Cedric Evina likely to come in on the left of midfield.
Jason Euell could fill a central midfield berth or play up front with Yann Kermorgant. Scott Wagstaff may be preferred to Euell as Kermorgant’s partner, with Danny Green coming in on the right.
The team could look something like this:
Hamer; Solly, Taylor, Morrison, Wiggins; Green, Hughes, Alonso, Evina; Wagstaff, Kermorgant.
Subs: Sullivan, Francis, Doherty, Euell, Smith.
James Linnington from the Isle Of Wight will be the referee.
All tickets are £5 for the match but only the East and Lower West Stands will be open for home supporters.
Brentford won the Southern Section last year before succumbing to Carlisle in the final. The Bees suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat at home to Huddersfield on Saturday so will be doubly keen to bounce back with a good performance.
It should be an interesting match.
